Cornell has made a commitment to an impressive Climate Action Plan. The University is aiming for zero carbon emissions by 2050 - better by far than most nations. This will take all sectors of the university working together.

Each of us has the opportunity to be involved - to choose how we live. Choosing sustainability is a choice made again and again -- day in day out, with passion and conviction, patience and persistence.

Join me on Wednesday, December 1 in talking about and sharing our passion for living sustainably. Come and connect; come and re-commit.

I want to express my appreciation to President Skorton's for his moving endorsement of my book. I hope each of you will be touched, moved and inspired by the people and groups whose stories are being told -- and create in your actions future stories!

“In this fascinating description of one community’s efforts to design and implement more sustainable living, learning and work environments, Liz Walker strikes just the right balance between successes achieved and the challenges that remain. I highly recommend the book to all who are interested in this urgent issue.” – David J. Skorton, President, Cornell University

Buffalo Street Books (BSB) is as much about relationships and programs as it is about selling books.  It is about book lovers having a special place in the heart of Ithaca to call second home -- a place to be in conversation about books.  Even with all the goodness and social capital that BSB represents it needed to innovate to stay open.

Here's BSB's story from Choosing a Sustainable Future:

"Just as farmers have developed Community Supported Agriculture as a way of gaining support from loyal customers who purchase a share in the harvest of the farm, Community Supported Books (CSB) is a new program developed by one of our local bookstores, Buffalo Street Books.  Locally owned, independent bookstores have been very hard hit by Internet retailers such as Amazon and big chain stores such as Barnes and Noble and Borders.  And the state of the economy has not helped either.

My New Book is Out!

I'm really happy to say that my new book, Choosing a Sustainable Future: Ideas and Inspiration from Ithaca, NY, is now in print!
When I got my first box of books a week ago, I was so excited that I could hardly open it. It took me back to birthing my first child - after all those months of pregnancy, I could hardly believe that there was a real live baby after all. When I finally got the box open, I heard myself yelling, "it really is a book!"

In this book, I try to capture the breadth and essence of the fast-growing sustainability and social justice movement in the Ithaca area. As the cover says, "A small city's big vision that can help transform your own community." I've been a grassroots activist my whole life, and I've rarely seen such a blossoming of interest and activity with a common purpose as is growing here.

There is a unity of purpose here that is reflected across a wide spectrum of players:

* from the county planning department, which has a goal of cutting carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 - for the whole county of 100,000 people!

* to small businesses, such as Garden Gate, which uses a biodiesel-powered van to deliver fresh, locally grown produce, dairy, meats and more,

* to academia (we have Cornell University, Ithaca College and TC3, our local community college, all engaged in creating courses about sustainability topics, as well as greening their buildings and operations)

* to grassroots efforts to provide alternative health care, alternative currency, food security, and more.

Many of these players work with each other and form coalitions to address specific areas. I hope you get a chance to read all about it, since I think the people and the organizations here are creating something truly inspiring!
